To appreciate Ken Glennie’s contribution we need to go back in time to 1928 when George Lees wrote “The Great arc-shaped montainous belt of Oman, projecting like a spur into the vitals of Persia and with heights reaching 9,900 ft, is the most striking feature of the map of Arabia, in that it is so obviously abnormal”.

Prof. John Grotzinger

is a Professor of Geology at the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prof. Grotzinger was - and still is - a field geologist interested in the evolution of Earth's surficial environments and biosphere. His research addresses the chemical development of the early oceans and atmosphere, the environmental context of early animal evolution, and the geologic factors that regulate sedimentary basins.

is a Research Professor and Director of the Center for Remote Sensing at Boston University, Boston MA, U.S.A. He is an Adjunct Professor of Geology at the Faculty of Science, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. He is also a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Geological Society of America Foundation, Boulder CO.

Mohamed
Mr. Mohamed Al-Harthy

is the first geologist in the early 1990s to put in writing a request to establish a geological society in Oman. Although the circumstances were not ripe at the time, he planted the initial seeds that would eventually germinate in 2001 with the establishment of the Geological Society of Oman (GSO). Once the Society became a reality, Mohamed played and continues to play a pivotal role in both setting strategic goals, executing various events and rendering valuable advise.
